What is REAL New York Coffee?

On the train, bus or in the car, more people get great-tasting “morning drive” coffee from independent food stores than chain stores. Before the coffee wars started, if you asked the person on the street where they go for a great cup of coffee, most people would have said the neighborhood deli or food store. If you asked the same question today as we did in a recent survey of coffee preferences, we were surprised to find the answer is still the same, the local neighborhood food store!
Back before coffee was more marketing than flavor, there were hundreds of coffee suppliers in the region that had their mix of big and small customers. From the big chains to the corner store, everyone bought from local coffee suppliers. As business progressed, premium products and preference blending allowed bigger outlets to create “their” special taste.
When we started out in the early 1980’s, our customers, both chains and independents, gravitated to a special blend of high-grown Arabica bean that we sold throughout the region. Then, when the chains consolidated their coffee buying decisions and decided on one “big box” flavor from coast to coast, we lost numerous national chain store customers in a relatively short period.
Needless to say, that was a challenging time for us. But, on top of our drive to succeed, we now had something they no longer had, our exclusive New York coffee flavor, upon which, the chains had built their coffee reputations. Today, that same brand, Black Diamond Coffee is the leading coffee sold by hundreds of independent food stores throughout Long Island, Brooklyn and Queens. It’s that same great taste you’ll never forget. The taste evocative of our part of New York, of the older simpler times when you had an extra minute or two to really enjoy the coffee you were holding in your hand.
New York has some real iconic foods and flavors that people all over the world prefer. Your Black Diamond Coffee has made its contribution to the tastes New Yorker’s love as much as the city’s reputation for pizza, tap water and our shared affinity for, “only in NY” bagels. It’s easy to make a cup of coffee, but making a consistently great cup takes effort in every step from tree to cup.
The last mile is the most important!
As you can see, there is a bit of shared pride from everyone that helps make Black Diamond Coffee a really distinctive, flavorful cup, every time. Above everything else once you settle on a product you truly prefer, a coffee drinker wants consistency. With this same sense of loyalty, the men and women that brew and serve our “magic” each day want you to be totally satisfied; they are the New York face you associate with great coffee.
When you visit an independent Black Diamond Coffee retailer, along with the best cup of the day you’ll find a perpetually clean, well-stocked coffee counter with hot fresh coffee and plenty of choices from condiments to napkins.
